Steeped in rich history, Longleat House is the ancestral home of the Marquess of Bath. Since its purchase in 1541, fifteen generations of the Thynne family have called Longleat home and together they have amassed an incredible collection of fine art, a wealth of rare English, French and Italian furniture, as well as tens of thousands of historic documents, and seven libraries housing over 44,000 printed books.

As part of Longleat, the House enjoys its share of almost 1 million visitors each year, providing in depth guided house tours and expertly curated house exhibitions to commemorate important events and famous milestones in history. Despite our fantastic collection of valuables, we still place priority on our most valuable asset – the team of dedicated and passionate colleagues that keep the operation running.

What will this role of House Steward entail?

As a House Steward, you’ll support the House Manager in ensuring the House, its outbuildings and its contents are beautifully cared for and presented to the highest standards. You’ll open and close the House, and take an active role in the care, movement of collection items as required. You will also assist with preparing space for exhibitions, moving furniture etc. You will be required to develop an understanding of House systems and security.

You’ll see family events and other functions at the House from set up through to breakdown, providing a consistent presence throughout to answer questions and deal with requests from the Family and their guests in a professional and prompt manner.

What will I need to be considered for this House Steward vacancy?

  • An interest in historical buildings and their collections
  • A hands on approach to maintenance, and general property upkeep associated skills
  • Excellent communication skills with a confident, mature and friendly nature
  • Flexible to work extra hours / weekends as required
Although not essential, experience of event planning and delivery would be advantageous.

What will I receive in return?

As a House Steward you will receive a salary of 18,000 (GBP), in addition to a range of attractive benefits that include; 29 days holiday inclusive of bank holidays, complimentary tickets to Longleat and Cheddar Gorge and Caves, discounts on food and beverages and retail merchandise, along with life assurance cover and more perks.

Contract: Permanent, working full time hours to vary on a 7-day rota basis – earliest rota’d start time from 9am, and latest finish time up to 8pm.

Please note, due to the nature of the business evenings and weekend work will be required, including bank holidays.
